Jan Claesz Rietschoof

Jan Claesz Rietschoof (May 21, 1652 - 1719) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of seascapes.

Rietschoof was born in Hoorn in 1652. He was trained as a painter by the painters Abraham Liedts and Ludolf Bakhuizen. He undertook to paint seascapes under the influence of Bakhuizen. His works betray Backhuysen’s influence, although they sometimes also resemble those of Abraham Storck.

Rietschoof's works are in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Shipping Museum, the Royal Museums Greenwich and the Westfries Museum in Hoorn. In 2005, a number of paintings from the Westfries Museum were stolen, including a work by Rietschoof "View of the East Island".

Rietschoof married 5 January 1676 in Hoorn with Marrytge Hendriks, a widow from Amsterdam. From this marriage, a son Hendrik was born, trained by him as a marine painter.

He taught his son Hendrik Rietschoof (1678–1747) how to paint; Hendrik's seascape and seaport drawings are online at the Amsterdam archives. In Hoorn he was a contemporary of the flower painter Jacob Rootius, who was the son of the influential schutterstuk painter Jan Albertsz Rotius.

His paintings today hang in various museums in the Netherlands.
