James Campbell

James Campbell (1828 - 1893) was an English artist, part of a group from Liverpool, who were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite style. He studied briefly at the Liverpool Academy and then moved on to the Royal Academy Schools in 1851.

His pictures focused on the details of lower-middle class and working class life in his native Liverpool, with works such as Waiting for Legal Advice which drew on his first hand experience as son of an insurance clerk. The Walker Art Gallery describes him as "the most Dickensian of all the Pre-Raphaelites."

Campbell's view seems to be in the Liverpool or Everton area looking south across the city, with a church tower, probably St. Luke’s, in the background. Campbell much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Similar modern subjects by Frith and others were at the height of their popularity in the late 1850s.The inclusion of a letter in Victorian narrative paintings was a common way of bringing in events or places beyond the single moment and location depicted.
