Giacinto Calandrucci (Palermo, 1646 - Sicily, 1707) was an Italian painter and engraver of the Baroque period.
Originally from Palermo, he moved to Rome with his fellow Palermitan painter and engraver Pietro del Pò. Like many painters in Rome in his day, then entered the large and prolific studio of Carlo Maratta. He afterwords worked under Giuseppe Passeri.
He went to Rome to study at the school of Carlo Maratta and the landlord Pietro del Pò.
Later, he had offices in the papal city thanks to his style inspired by his master.
Thus he performed works in the Church of Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi, in the Church of St. Bonaventure at the Palatine, in the Chapel Altieri of the Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli and in the Church of San Paolo alla Regola.
Over the years she passed the colorful colors of the Maratta school in pastel and soft colors and approaching the Rococo.
In the 1680s Calandrucci completed decorative frescoes of the Four Seasons in the Palazzo Lante; mythological frescoes in the gallery of the Palazzo Muti–Papazzurri; the decoration of the gallery of the Palazzo Strozzi–Besso; and a ceiling fresco, and the Sacrifice of Ceres in the papal Villa Falconieri at Frascati. He also painted idyllic pastoral scenes, among them two pictures at Burghley House, Stamford, England. He also painted two works for the main altar and the Cimini Chapel of Roman church of Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi, a Virgin and Child with St Anne and Saints in frescoes and canvases in San Bonaventura, a Holy Family with St Anne and St Anthony of Padua, both in San Paolo alla Regola, and frescoes in Santa Maria dell’Orto. In 1705 he returned to Palermo, where he began the decoration of the oratory of San Lorenzo. He also painted for the church of San Salvatore, representing The Virgin with St. Basil and other Saints. He died at Palermo. His brother Domenico and his nephew Giovanni Battista were painters of lesser renown.
Thus he realizes the frescoes of Santa Maria dell'Orto in Trastevere, that is, the Resurrection of Christ (1703) in the underpass of the right transept but above all the great Assumption of Mary (1706) on the vault of the central nave, whose overall design is however attributed To his master Carlo Maratta.
In Sicily, where he received less fortune, he made works in the Oratory of Saint Francis and Lorenzo in Palermo.
Given the coming of his death, these works were completed by Brother Domenico.
His grandson Giovanbattista completed other works by Giacinto (also receiving an accolade from the Accademia di San Luca) including some works of Palermo, the church of San Lorenzo in Borgo, the Chapel of Sant'Anna and the Church of San Lorenzo in Peschiera Rome.
He left behind an abundance of drawings on topics from both historical and religious subjects to acute daily observations.
