Fanny Churberg

Fanny Churberg (Dec 12, 1845 - May 10, 1892) was a Swedish-Finnish landscape painter. Churberg was influenced greatly by German late Romanticism, and his productions represent most of the aesthetic views of the Düsseldorf School However, he developed a strong original expression in which the use of colors and brushes was often unusually intense with the prevailing art trends The unconventional elements aroused controversial reactions in the art world during that time Churberg's ideals were in the 1860's: patriotism, Finnish language development, national culture, women's affairs and religion These values were important to him, although he thought he was unconventional in his time A well-educated and educated crowd did not understand his brave temperament At that time, Kaina and Sulo did not have a strong sense of expression.

Her father, Matias Churberg, was a doctor from a family of farmers and her mother Maria was the daughter of the vicar in Liperi parish, Nils Johan Perander Fanny was the third of seven children Four of her siblings died when they were young and so Fanny grew up with her two older brothers Waldemar and Torsten Fanny was proud of her Ostrobothnian family and heritage and was planning along with her brothers on changing the surname to Kuurila according to the family's old estate They never got around to it though

When Fanny was twelve her mother died and she had to take on large parts of the responsibility of being the matron of the house Later on she got sent to a girls' school in Porvoo, but she returned to Vaasa when she was 17–18 years old When she was 20 her father died Fanny cared for him day and night during the last months of his life After her father's death she and her brothers moved to Helsinki, where they lived with their aunt

She started her artistic training in Helsinki in 1865 with private lessons from Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, Emma Gyldén and Berndt Lindholm In Helsinki, Fanny Churberg began painting studies by taking private lessons The teachers were Selma Chaeffer and Alexandra Frosterus-Sålt (1865-1866), Emma Gyldén and Berndt Adolf Lindholm (1866-1867) He continued his studies as a private student under the guidance of Carl Ludwig from 1867 to 1868 and 1871-1874 in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he was acclaimed at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art , but returned to Finland every summer He was also the first Finnish painters studying in Paris Churberg was a private student of Vilhelm von Gegerfelt in Paris in 1876 In 1878 he traveled to the Paris World Expo, and folk art became more and more interested in him

Fanny Churberg were not familiar with poetry, but he depicted the late fall, the puddle, the bare rocks and the creeps Churberg charts sentimentality In 1879, Fanny Churberg received the First Prize of the Finnish Art Association (so-called Duck Prize) but in 1880 Churberg stopped painting altogether and devoted himself to the activities of the Society of Craftsmen in Finland comprehensively, within the Executive Board of the Association from 1880 to 1883 He wrote in the 1887-1889 Finnish newspaper with the pseudonym -y His career as a painter was only about ten years , and he was long remembered only as an influence on the arts industry

In the 19th century, Finns' interest in crafting handicrafts decreased, as industrialization led to cheap products for the market In order to avoid the loss of a valuable craftsmanship, Fanny Churberg was founded in 1879 by the Friends of Finnish Handicrafts, whose task was to "promote and refine Finnish craftsmanship in the patriotic and artistic direction" Fanny Churberg devoted entirely to this development of craftsmanship

Fanny Churberg's career ended suddenly in 1880 Her health was weaker and she took care of her brother Torsten who was suffering from tuberculosis Torsten's death in 1882 made her quite lonely and her will to live lessened as did her energy The other brother Waldemar, who she used to be very close to, had married in 1877 The reason for ending her career might also have been the harsh criticism she had met before, but she never withdrew completely from the art circles She did not however paint anymore after 1880, not even to her own amusement, but during her career she had still managed to paint over 300 paintings
