Enric Casanovas


Enric Casanovas i Roy (Barcelona, ​​12 of August of 1882 - 2 of January of 1948) was a Spanish sculptor.

He studied at the Llotja school in Barcelona, ​​extending his training in the workshop of the sculptor Josep Llimona for two years.

In 1898 participates for the first time in a sample in the National Exhibition of Beautiful Arts of Saragossa.

With 14 years came as an apprentice in the workshop of sculpture of Josep Llimona, where he worked a couple of years. At the same time he studied in Halle and started under the influence of Lemon in introducing modernist aesthetics realistic themes with social content. From very young he showed his skills as a sculptor and only sixteen he won an award from the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Zaragoza. He continued his studies in Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, London and Florence thanks to a travel grant.

Along with Claudi Grau and Manuel Ainaud an exhibition at the Quatre Gats in 1903, preceded by another in the Sala Pares with painter Ros and Güell. In 1904 he moved to Paris, where he took part in several Salons d'Automne (1904, 1909) and exhibitions Champ de Mars (1904, 1906, 1908, 1909, 1910). In the French capital will remain until summer 1913 but made short visits to Barcelona. During these breaks in the city, frequented the gatherings at the Lyon d'Or.

From 1904 to 1913 he alternates his stays between Paris and Barcelona, ​​making friends with Picasso, Maillol, Gargallo and other artists. On his return to Barcelona, ​​he set up a workshop where disciples like Rebull, Fenosa, Granyer, Viladomat, etc. pass. It participates with the association The Arts and the Artists, of which it became president.

In Paris defines his style that falls fully within the coordinates noucentistes. The representation of women as the embodiment of beauty, youth, freedom ... following the ideal of Ben Planted hereinafter defined its language, debtor Arístides Maillol.

In 1911 carried out the first single that led the Catalan Faianç Santiago Segura and where will expose in 1912 and 1914. That same year he joined the association Arts and Artists.

In 1915 he took part in the Catalan Art Nouveau exhibition that takes place in Sabadell, which presents four works, all owned by Santiago Segura. One of these works, Woman's Head is precisely the piece that retains the MAS and entered as part of the donation Maria Cladellas, widow of Segura.

At the workshop Casanovas formed a good group of sculptors as Apelles Fenosa, Joan Rebull, Josep Viladomat Josep Granyer, Josep M. Subirachs ... In 1919, the City Council will dedicated a hall of honor Municipal Spring Exhibition. In 1922 he was appointed member of the Salon d'Automne and married Leona Guerri.

In 1927 he founded the Association of Sculptors of Catalonia, an organization of which he was president.

He presented two exhibitions at the Sala Pares, 1927 and 1928, respectively. Following the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929 won a first medal.

His work is located within Mediterranean, but with a great renovation and personal creation, participated in numerous exhibitions, obtaining the gold medal in the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona of 1929. He entered in the Academy of Beautiful Arts of San Jorge of Barcelona in the Year 1932.

1932 Casanovas and his family start to summer in Tossa, where he will spend the Civil War until October 1939 exiled in France. They settled in Avignon and returned to Barcelona until 1942. During this period he made some of his best pictures. In 1945 presents his latest exhibition in the gallery Estilo de Madrid.

Exiled in France from 1939, he returned to Barcelona in 1943, where he died in 1948 at 66 years of age.

Casanovas has also left some large pieces like a monument to Monturiol in Figueres (1916) or ornamental statue in Plaza de Catalonia in Barcelona (1927).
