Bartolomeo Cesi

Bartolomeo Cesi (Aug 16, 1556 - 1629) was a painter of the Baroque era of the Bolognese School.

He was born into a wealthy Bolognese family, followed an artistic training course for young people under the guidance of Giovanni Francesco Bezzi (Nosadella).

He adhered to the late-Roman culture, as evidenced by the works carried out in the chapel Vezza of the basilica of Santo Stefano di Bologna (1574) and the mythological background frescoes realized at the Palazzo Bocchi.

In Bologna, he contributed works to the Duomo, San Procolo, and Santo Stefano. He collaborated with Ludovico Carracci and Prospero Fontana on some projects. His pious sobriety was influenced by his friendship with Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti of Bologna, who had attended the Council of Trent. His biography is contained in Carlo Cesare Malvasia's Felsina Pittrice.

In a second artistic phase, Cesi approached the Tuscan current, more responsive to his ideals in line with the climate and dictates of Controriformation, influenced by the presence and advice of Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti, author of the Discourse around sacred and profane images (1582 ).

These fusion tendencies between naturalistic elements and Christian devotion emerged in St. Benedict's presence in the church of San Procolo.

His Roman living room around 1591 proved fruitful thanks to his contacts with Scipione Pulzone, which further enriched him with melancholic religious elements, deep chromatic varieties and a formal severity. This period dates back to the frescoes at Certosa di Maggiano, the palace of the apse of the Siena Cathedral (coming from the same certosa), and frescoes in the chapel of Bulgari Bolognese.

In 1595, Cesi completed the tryptich including the 'Adoration of the Magi and Virgin and Saints for the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna.

Last, among his great works, the choir of the Cathedral of Bologna and its embellished crypt thanks to the help of Prospero Fontana.

In some projects he collaborated with Ludovico Carracci.
