
Antoni Caba i Casamitjana (1838 - 1907) was a Catalonian painter who worked in the Realistic style and is best known for his portraits.
He trained at the School of the Exchange during the 1850s, where he received training from the hand of Gabriel Planella Pablo Milan and Fontanals and Claudi Lorenzale and Joaquin Mir Trinxet where he took classes Antoni Caba. Thanks to a pension council later studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he received lessons from Federico de Madrazo. His first exhibition was in 1864 in the capital, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. The state bought him one of the exhibits to incorporate the funds from the Prado Museum.
For a time it was formed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was under the orders of the Swiss painter Gleyre Marc. The opposition won in 1874 for the professorship of class "Colorful and Composition" Market School, he got to work Pedenidemt of Judas, and between 1887 and 1900 he was the director. During this time dedicated to portraits to Barcelona and the Catalan bourgeoisie in particular, who was nicknamed photography. He was a member of the Royal Artistic Circle.
His work is related to the influence of pictorial realism with romanticism. He made murals, among other places at the Lyceum and was a renowned portrait artist with a style very sober. His portrait of the painter Joaquim Vayreda can be seen currently at the National Art Museum of Catalonia. In the Catalan Royal Academy of Fine Arts in St. George, part of the works reproduced, preserved the following paintings: Caesar's Tribute, copy of The Prince Baltasar Carlos Velazquez, Portrait of Frederic Oliveras Portrait of Maria Moret d 'Oliveras Portrait of Narcissus Oliveras Oliveras Portrait of Henrietta, Marquis Alfarràs Portrait, Portrait of Beatrice Monserdà Vidal and Claudi Lorenzale portrait and a portrait of the painter made in 1907 by Arcadi Mas Fontdevila. The Prado Museum in Madrid is the heroine of Peralada. There is also his work at the Art Museum of the Emporda Figueres, the Gallery of Illustrious Catalans (Portrait of Antoni Viladomat, 1872) and Víctor Balaguer Library Museum, where we can find, among others, the sketch (1886) portrait of reina Maria Cristina of Hapsburg - Lorena and his son Alfonso XIII is located in the Catalan Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi.
For a short time, he was enrolled at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under the direction of the Swiss painter, Charles Gleyre. In 1874, he obtained a teaching position as "Professor of Color and Composition" at the Escola and served as the Director from 1887 to 1901. During this time, he dedicated himself to creating portraits for middle-class clients in Catalonia; especially Barcelona, for which he received the nickname "fotográficos".
In addition to his portraits, he created decorative murals in the Gran Teatro del Liceo and several private residences.
He attended the Escola de la Llotja during the 1850s, where he studied with Pau Milà i Fontanals and Claudi Lorenzale. Thanks to a stipend from the school board, he later attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where his primary instructor was Federico de Madrazo. His first exhibition came in 1864, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. The government bought one of his works for the collection of the Museo del Prado.
