Works:
The poster was designed to commemorate Alan Chan Design Company for being awarded as one of the Ten Best Design Firms in the world in 1996 by the New York Graphis Annual. Alan Chan Design Company was the only Asian design company that received such honor.
The design combines the number “one” in both Chinese and Arabian to form the Chinese character of ten -- “ 十.” With “ 一” in traditional Chinese calligraphy and “ 1 ” being represented by a vertically placed brush, the design accentuates the One Out of Ten achievement of Alan Chan Design Company.

The poster features different styles of chopsticks in pairs collected from various Asian countries. The layout is specially arranged by a large number of chopsticks (signify different types of people of different Asian nations) scattering neatly and evenly over the whole poster, which form a silhouette of a typical Asian bowl for rice. This arrangement is to illustrate a Chinese saying, "一樣米養百樣人" which means "It takes all sorts to make a world".

All these elements: a pair of chopsticks and a small bowl have constituted a very simple art of "Eating" an act that you, I and our forefathers have indulged so much of our time in not just for survival needs but also for sensuous enjoyment. To the Chinese people, "eating" is an extremely important aspect in the daily life. There is an idiom in China, "民以食為天 People make food their Heaven" which means people respect food just as they esteem the sacred Heaven. It is a vital part of life and also all part of our living heritage!

This poster was designed for a special presentation on Alan Chan’s works at the Shenzhen University, Guangdong, China on 14 Nov 1998. Titled as “Design and Lifestyle”, the poster denoted the relationship between design and lifestyle as a pair of chopsticks which always come together and influence each other.

The pair of chopsticks also illustrated the relationship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen; one chopstick is made up by the Chinese characters of Hong Kong (香 港), while the other one comprises the characters of Shenzhen (深 圳). Being the closest Mainland city to Hong Kong and a special economic region, Shenzhen has been receiving great influences from Hong Kong, and simultaneously plays a major supportive role to the economic development of Hong Kong. The two cities are closely linked and always being associated to each other.
