Adriaen Collaert


Adriaen Collaert (1560 - 1618) was a Flemish designer and engraver Adriaen Collaert draws and engraves scenes of Christian tradition and devotion The two Collaert brothers associate their workshops with those of Philippe Galle and their joint production does not always make it possible to distinguish them well

Born in Antwerp around 1560, Adriaen Collaert is the son of Hans Collaert and the brother of Jan Collaert In 1586 he married Justa Galle, the daughter of the engraver and publisher Philippe Galle

His activity took place in Antwerp between 1580 and 1618 He became a freelance master of the guild of Saint-Luc in 1580 His first works represented The Seven Planets after Maarten de Vos He then worked for Philippe Galle and tried to become autonomous around 1587-1588 In 1589 he worked for Plantin-Moretus and took pupils from 1593 Among them were Jean Bol, Adriaen Boon, his brother Jan Collaert and Abraham van Merlen

From 1593-94 he took on pupils and from 1589 he worked for Plantijn Moretus His pupils were Jan Boel, Quirin Boel (I), Adriaan Boon, Jan Collaert (II), and Abraham van Merlen He was also an independent print publisher

Adriaen usually signs his work Adrian Collaert Sculp Or Adr Collart excud And perhaps by an AC monogram which F Brulliot declares doubtful

In 1597, he was elected dean of the guild of Saint-Luc of Antwerp

Adriaen Collaert was the brother of Jan Collaert II, and he had a son, Jan Baptist Collaert II or Jan Collaert III (1591 - 1627/8), and a grandson who followed in his footsteps as print makers and publishers

In 1593, Jérôme Nadal produced a collection of 153 prints entitled Evangelicae Historiae Imagines, which are engraved by several Flemish engravers, eleven of which are signed by Adriaen Collaert

A thesis defended in 2006 by Sarah S Eftekharian-Laporte highlights the international radiance of Flemish engravings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by describing the Mural Paintings of the St Bethlehem and St Savior Churches in New Djulfa (Isfahan) Numerous prints by Adriaen Collaert serve as models for the murals of these Armenian churches in Iran:
