The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma Takasaki-shi, Japan




The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma (群馬県立近代美術館) opened in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, in 1974. The collection includes works by Monet, Renoir, and Soga Jasoku.

The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma opened in the autumn of 1974. The activities of the museum include the acquisition and preservation of artworks, art research and study, organization of permanent and temporary exhibitions, gallery talks, lectures and other educational programs. In 1994, museum facilities were expanded with Museum Shop and Restaurant. In 1998, Contemporary Art Wing, designed specifically for exhibitions of contemporary art, was added. In 2008, outdated facilities have been renovated to make the museum more functional and pleasant to visit. We will continue to create a museum suited to the twenty-first century.

Major features of the museum collection are the Koho-an Inoue Collection made up of ancient Japanese and Chinese art, and a group of works by artists born in Gunma, including Fukuzawa Ichiro, Yamaguchi Kaoru, and Tsuruoka Masao. It also contains a wide range of modern Japanese and modern Western art, contemporary art and textile.

Permanent exhibitions:Artworks from the permanent collection of over 1700 items are kept on display throughout the year. The content of the permanent exhibition is chosen to fit particular themes and changed from time to time.

Temporary exhibitions:These exhibitions are made up of works of modern and contemporary art on loan from both Japanese and foreign collections and organized on a variety of themes. The Gunma Biennale for Young Artists is held on a continuing basis.

Educational programs:The museum staff provides gallery talks to museum visitors for better understanding of works. The museum also presents exhibitions for children and other special programs, organizes lectures and work shops.

From Tokyo Station:Take JR Joetsu Shinkansen or JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki Station (1 hour).

From Ueno Station:Take JR Takasaki Line or JR Joetsu Shinkansen, Nagano Shinkansen to Takasaki Station

From Takasaki Station (East Exit):Take a Bus to Gunma no Mori Stop (20-35 minutes), or take a taxi (20 minutes).

From Shinmachi Station:Take a Bus to Gunma no Mori Stop (40 minutes), Take a taxi (10 minutes).
