Henri-Pierre Danloux

Henri-Pierre Danloux (Feb 24, 1753 - Jan 3, 1809) was a French painter and draftsman and engraver

He was born in Paris Brought up by his architect uncle, Danloux was a pupil of Lépicié and later of Vien, whom he followed to Rome in 1775 In 1783, he returned to Lyon and Paris, where he was patroned by the Baronne Mégret de Sérilly d'Etigny, who secured for him a number of important portrait commissions exclusively for the aristocracy He emigrated to London in 1792 thereby escaping the French Revolution and its potential consequences

He emigrated to England in 1792 where he resided until 1802 During this stay he enjoyed an undeniable success that far exceeded French circles

While in England, he was commissioned for portraits of the officer class and the Well-to-Do Members of one such family, the Lamberts of Oxforshire, engaged the master in 1800 and had sittings for its individual members: father, mother and son, himself, later in life, serving in the Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards, a Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire and High Sheriff Danloux, returned to Paris in 1801, there resuming his career
Danloux was influenced by fashionable English portrait painters such as Thomas Lawrence, John Hoppner, and George Romney

Among his best works are the portrait of Mlle Duthé, that of Monseigneur de la Marche at his office (the Louvre museum) or that of the Duke de Choiseul in his prison

Influenced by John Singleton Copley and Henry Raeburn, he painted the portrait of many English and Scottish He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and became the appointed painter of the Count of Artois in emigration to Holyrood Many of his works have been engraved, notably by English artists His diary was partly published by Baron Roger Portalis

Back in France, he exhibited again at the Salon, but did not meet the success he hoped for

It was a fashionable theme in the eighteenth century A family surprise in its intimacy: a scene of family tenderness during a walk in the countryside that shows a relaxation in the toilets and attitudes Here we find the theme of nature brought up to date by the Philosophers This composition, however, refers to representations of the Holy Family: symbolic bearing with the gesture of blessing of the father and the presence of a lamb with which a child plays This family portrait is similar to a work published in the French Portraits exhibition catalog from Largillière to Manet (Copenhagen, 1960)
