Francisco Domingo Marqués


Francisco José Domingo y Marqués (12 March 1842, Valencia – 22 July 1920, Madrid) was a Spanish painter in the Eclectic style.

He was the son of Francisco Domingo Marqués Blasco Lazaro and Agustina. He started his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, with professors Rafael Montesinos (great admirer of Ribera, painter copied with great intensity the young artist), Miquel Pou, Vicent Castelló and French Placid. Futures coincided with other artists like Antonio Muñoz and Salvador Martínez Cubells Degrain.

In 1864 he moved to Madrid to continue his training at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, with Madrazo and Carlos Federico Sáez. He received an honorable mention for his painting The expulsion of the Moors from the kingdom of Valencia and in 1867 was awarded a third medal Duel seventeenth century (preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia). Other works that are now painted in the Mass, the masquerade, a poor and Saint Joseph Calasanz made by the College of Escolapis Gandia.

The Regional Exhibition in Valencia gets a gold medal for the Palleter historical subject box and in December 1867 won the Rome prize of the Council granting a pension to the winner in this city for the culmination of their training. The same year he painted the study Muñoz Degrain (Prado Museum). He traveled to Rome in 1868, where it continues with its historical compositions under the direction of Eduardo Rosales. In 1872 he moved to Madrid with his brother Augustine. Here he painted for the palace of the Dukes of the box bailén A party at the time of Louis XV. Two years later he married Elvira Fallola in his honeymoon to Andalucia painted house Pilate.

Decided to settle in Paris, hosted by protecting the dealer Henri Haro. Domingo live in the city for thirty-nine years, until 1914, interrupted only in 1887 to stay the request of Queen Maria Cristina to make a portrait of Alfonso XIII. On 17 June 1917 he was elected full member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and the July 30, 1918 received a tribute of his hometown.

Last Andalusian painter's work was given to the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia by his son Roberto Domingo Fallola (Paris, 1883 - Madrid, 1956), also a painter, specializing in bullfighting themes. Francesc Domingo died in Madrid on 22 July 1920.
