Quirijn van Brekelenkam

Quirijn or Quiringh Gerritsz van Brekelenkam (1622, Zwammerdam - 1669, Leiden), was a Dutch Baroque genre painter. He probably studied under Gerard Dou, and as a result his paintings from the 1640s and 1650s are similar to those of the Leiden fijnschilders.

Quirijn van Brekelenkam was born after 1622 in Zwammerdam in the Netherlands.

He probably studied painting at Leiden with Gérard Dou2. He is one of the founders of the Guild of Saint-Luc de Leyde in 1648. Like many painters, he carries out a second profession to support himself, which incomes from painting only partially satisfy. He obtained a license for the sale of beer and alcohol around 1656. He is one of the fijnschilders, "precious painters" characteristic of the Leyden painting school.

Quirijn van Brekelenkam likes the theme of the tailor's workshop. Thirteen versions of this theme are listed in the collections. In these pictures, the position of the master and the apprentices, enlightened by the left, is essentially always the same.

He died after 1669 in Leiden.
