Hendrick Corneliszoon van Vliet (1611/1612, Delft - buried October 28, 1675, Delft) was a Dutch Golden Age painter remembered mostly for his church interiors.
His date of birth is unknown, He studied under his uncle Willem van der Vliet and was admitted to the painters guild in Delft in 1632.
He was good at perspective but later took up portrait painting with Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt. Van Vliet started out with architectural painting, particularly the painting of church interiors. Before him, architectural painting had been pioneered by Pieter Saenredam, who introduced innovative techniques of perspective.
The interiors of the Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk of Delft are from 1650 frequent motifs of his pictures. Such architectural images were extremely popular at this time, but only a few artists such as Pieter Jansz. Saenredam, Emanuel de Witte and Hendrick Cornelisz. Van Vliet dominated the reproduction of light-flooded church interior spaces in this perfection.
Most of his pictures are unsigned. His architectural portraits are among the best in the Netherlands, and can be found in the Amsterdam Reichsmuseum (Gezicht de de Oude kerk de Delft, 1654).
By 1650s, architectural painting gained great popularity. Among the churches painted by Van Vliet are the Pieterskerk (Peter's Church) in Leiden, the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft, and the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Delft (Van Vliet would be buried in the latter in 1675). Emanuel de Witte and Gerard Houckgeest, also painted these Delft church interiors. Paintings of the tomb of William the Silent were quite popular.
Little is known about his family situation. Although he painted Protestant churches with devotion, he himself was probably Catholic. He had several children, one was buried in the Delfter Oude Kerk in 1641, possibly another in 1652. His daughter Catharina entered a small inheritance after the death of van Vliet's wife in 1681. Van Vliet himself died in 1675 and was buried in the Oude Kerk in Delft.
